In today’s Bible reading* God condemns His people for their unfaithfulness, but He says He will establish a new covenant with His people.

But I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish a permanent covenant with you. … I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD, so that when I make atonement for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth again because of your disgrace. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.’ ”
Ezekiel 16:60, 62-63 (CSB)

Notice that God doesn’t say that He and His people will establish a new covenant together. He says that He will establish a new covenant. This is what God did in the beginning with Abraham. God was the originator and maintainer of the covenant with His people. Why? Because He knew that they could never keep up their end of the covenant.

On the night He was betrayed, Jesus sat down and celebrated the Passover with His Disciples. During the meal, He looked back at Ezekiel’s prophecy.

Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said,
“Drink from it, all of you. For this is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 26:27–28 (CSB)

Jesus fulfilled the covenant with His own blood sacrifice so that God’s people would have a right standing before Him.
