God Promises to Destroy Babylon

| | | |

God has promised to use Babylon to destroy nations and cities, even those occupied by His people. In today’s Bible reading* God promises to destroy Babylon for their mistreatment of His people.

But wait, didn’t God use Babylon to accomplish His purpose of punishing His people? How could He turn around and punish Babylon for doing what He told them to do?

Because He is God. And God is sovereign.

God planned to use Babylon to accomplish His purposes. But Babylon chose to participate with God’s plan. Although God designed the plan, Babylon was fully culpable.

Each of us is a victim of The Fall. We inherited Adam’s sin condition. We all have the propensity to sin. Our default setting is to choose everything that is opposed to God, including God Himself. And yet, we are fully culpable for our own sin.

An alcoholic may inherit alcoholism from his parents, he can’t blame them for his own issues. He chose to take that first drink. And you chose to commit that first sin. And so did I. And we all continue to act on that part of us that has yet to be redeemed from The Fall, called the “flesh”.

Unfortunately, we were so deeply affected by The Fall that until we cross over to the other side of eternity, we will continue to deal with the “already, but not yet” aspects of our salvation. But we must press on and kill our fleshly desires.
