The Lord Eagerly Waits to Show Mercy

Text block of "Mercy: Not getting what you deserve."

We read in today’s Bible reading*,

Therefore the LORD is waiting to show you mercy, and is rising up to show you compassion, for the LORD is a just God. All who wait patiently for him are happy. For people will live on Zion in Jerusalem. You will never weep again; he will show favor to you at the sound of your outcry; as soon as he hears, he will answer you. The Lord will give you meager bread and water during oppression, but your Teacher will not hide any longer. Your eyes will see your Teacher, and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.”
Isaiah 30:18–21 (CSB)

The Lord is waiting to show you mercy… for the Lord is a just God.” Isaiah reminds his readers that God is rich in mercy and is eager to show it to everyone who turns to Him. “All who wait patiently for him are happy.”

I often remind our church that “Mercy is not getting what you deserve.” Mercy is the flipside of a coin with Grace being on the other side. “Grace is getting what we don’t deserve.

Like the Jewish Nation that Isaiah is addressing in his prophecy, we all deserve judgment. We all deserve punishment for our rebellion against a holy God. No one deserves forgiveness. No one deserves God’s love and favor. No one deserves eternal life. No one deserves fellowship in a love relationship with God.

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses.
You are saved by grace!

Ephesians 2:4–5 (CSB)

God is waiting to be merciful and gracious to you. “He will show favor to you at the sound of your outcry; as soon as he hears, he will answer you.”

Have you cried out to him today?
