Picture of the word encourage

Today’s Bible reading* is basically a summary of the forty years the people of Israel wandered in the desert after not believing God’s promises for provision and protection if they would proceed into the Promised Land. But forty years have passed and everyone who escaped their Egyptian slavery has died, except for Caleb and Joshua, the two spies who believed God would provide and protect the people.

God told Moses he would not be able to enter the Promised Land because of his disobedience of striking a rock for water when God told him to merely speak to the rock. Now Moses is preparing to send the people into the Promised land, led by their new leaders.

Application

It’s been forty years since they scouted out the land that God had promised to Abraham and his descendants. I’m sure that these two faithful leaders needed encouragement along the way. I wonder how often Caleb and Joshua dreamed about their new homeland and all of its glories they witnessed over the forty days they scouted out the land with the ten other spies.

Just like Moses records here at the beginning of Deuteronomy, reminders are very important in our walk with God. Spend a few minutes today looking back over your walk with Jesus. How did you come to know Him? What were the circumstances? What have been the high points in your walk? What were the low points? What were the struggles you faced? Who has been instrumental in encouraging you in your personal spiritual growth?

Who are you being instrumental in their personal spiritual growth? If you can’t think of anyone, maybe you need to pray about who God would want you to be involved with. All of us need people who are further along in their faith than we are. All of us need people who are about the same place in their faith. And all of us need at least one person who is behind us in our faith whom we can encourage along the way.
